Daniel Ades is the Founder and Managing Partner of Kawa Capital. Daniel has been responsible for overseeing the firm's investment decisions since inception in 2007. Daniel is ultimately responsible for the overall strategy across all of Kawa Capital’s investing and together with the Chief Risk Officer, the allocation of capital and risk among strategies and investments. Daniel has been instrumental in building the investment team, creating an infrastructure capable of processing large amounts of simultaneous transactions and analysis, as well ensuring an institutional-quality foundation for the different areas of the firm. Prior to forming Kawa Capital, Daniel was a Partner at Horn Eichenwald Investments, an SEC registered boutique investment advisor servicing high net worth clients based in Miami, FL. Daniel has a B.A. in Economics and International Relations from Tufts University, and a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy (MALD) from the Fletcher School with a focus on economic development and international business relations. Daniel received honors for his Master’s thesis on pricing of emerging market debt, building a model for determining credit spreads in emerging market bonds by linking a government’s tax revenue, its existing debt load, and the volatility of currency option markets. He was born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil and is philanthropically active in several organizations in Miami and Israel, with a focus in education.
Alexandre (Alex) Saverin is the Co-Founder and Chief Risk Officer of Kawa Capital. Alex spends most of his time evaluating investment opportunities, as well as actively participating in quantitative analysis, risk management, hedging and downside analysis for the hedge fund. He has also overseen the implementation and build-out of Kawa’s proprietary trading and monitoring systems. Prior to Kawa, Alex was at Horn Eichenwald Investments, where he led the development of an asset management software platform and explored automated computer based trading models. Prior to Horn Eichenwald, Alex was a Senior Developer for Motorola's Multimedia Messaging team, where he helped to successfully launch Motorola's multimedia messaging platform to over 60 million Verizon and US Cellular subscribers. Alex has a B.A. in Computer Science from Cornell University. At Cornell, he was involved in computer vision research and studied computational finance.
Cristina Baldim has been with Kawa Capital since 2010, leading investment research, origination, analysis, and execution for the hedge fund as well as private co-investment (“club”) deals. Cristina is also responsible for building out of the investment analyst team. Cristina’s background includes over 20 years of institutional experience in asset management and investment banking. Prior to Kawa Capital, she worked at Citigroup Venture Capital International from 2001 to 2007, dedicated to emerging markets private equity, venture capital and mezzanine investments. While at Citigroup, Cristina closed, monitored, and/or exited investments representing over $500 million in invested capital in various industries. Earlier in her career, Cristina worked in investment banking for JPMorgan Chase from 1998 to 2001, in Corporate Banking and M&A for Banco Société Générale S.A. from 1997 to 1998, and for BankBoston S.A. from 1995 to 1997. Cristina has a degree in Business Administration from Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado in São Paulo, Brazil, and has served on the Board of various companies.
Chris Chakford joined Kawa Capital in August 2017 as a Managing Director in the Investments team. He is responsible for sourcing opportunities across the credit space, with a focus on ABS and real estate for private co-investment (“club”) deals. Chris’ background includes over 20 years in trading and asset management. Prior to joining Kawa, Chris was a managing director of New Oak Asset Management, an SEC registered investment advisory firm, and the Portfolio Manager of the SJ-MAC Funds, which focused on super-jumbo loans on single-family residential real estate in high end markets. Chris was integral in launching the SJ-MAC funds and ran all aspects of day-to-day operations and portfolio management. Previously, Chris led, hired and developed the entire Fixed Income Trading Division of SecondMarket, which created the first and leading secondary marketplace for auction rate securities. Drawing on his extensive derivative experience, Chris represented SecondMarket before the Office of Financial Stability of the U.S. Department of the Treasury with regard to Troubled Asset Relief Program warrants. Earlier in his career, Chris worked at the Chicago Board of Options Exchange for six years as an Independent Market Maker. Chris graduated magna cum laude from Miami (OH) University.
Fernando Braghin joined Kawa Capital in 2017 as a director in the investment team. Fernando’s main responsibility at Kawa Capital is to underwrite and execute the Private (“Club”) investments. Prior to Kawa Capital, Fernando was a partner and the Chief Compliance Officer at Horn Eichenwald Investments Corp, a SEC registered investment advisor based in Miami, where he provided portfolio management and consolidation services for high net worth families. Fernando was also a director of operations for Bridgeloan Investors Inc, focusing on financing and construction of single family homes, and a partner and board member on the credit committee of Bridgeinvest, LLC – a real estate lender focusing on short-term financing secured by commercial real estate. He graduated with a dual degree in Electrical and Industrial Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
REITS, Student Loan & Solar/Renewable Energy Securitizations, CRE, Corporate Credit Daniel Amer joined Kawa Capital in 2011 and serves as an Investment Director, leading research on tradeable securities for the hedge fund across a variety of asset classes. Daniel also provides underwriting and execution of private (“club”) investments throughout the capital structure, including leading the acquisition and financing of several commercial real estate and renewable energy opportunities over the past few years. Prior to Kawa Capital, Daniel worked at Raymond James as a Senior Equity Research Associate covering real estate equities from 2007 to 2011. Daniel graduated Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania in 2007, receiving a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School of Business, with concentrations in Finance and Real Estate. Daniel is also a CFA charterholder.
Emile Ernandez joined Kawa Capital in April 2018 as a Director in the Investments Team with a focus on ABS, real estate and Private (“Club”) transactions. Emile’s background includes over 13 years of securitized products banking, structuring and trading experience. Prior to joining Kawa Capital, Emile was a Director in the Securitized Products Group, within the Investment Banking division at Barclays in New York, where he spent 7 years focusing on originating and structuring Esoteric structured finance transactions, including securitizations, warehouse facilities and illiquid trading opportunities. Prior to Barclays, Emile spent 6 years at Deutsche Bank in New York, as a Vice President in the Credit Solutions Group, with a focus on structured lending in emerging markets and ABS transactions across the student loan and residential mortgage sectors. Emile received his Bachelor’s degree in Economics, with honors, from the University of Chicago.
Focus: Special Situations, Canadian Securities, Event-Driven Corporates Patrick McGuire joined Kawa Capital in April 2016, coming from West Face Capital, where he focused on special situation investing and trading from 2008 to 2016 as a Portfolio Manager and Trader in Toronto, Canada. Previously, he worked at Greywolf Capital in New York as a Senior Investment Analyst, focused on event driven investments from 2004 to 2008. Patrick worked at Salida Capital as Vice President in Credit and Volatility trading from 2002 to 2004, and Gordon Capital (aq. by HSBC) as Vice President of Proprietary / Special Situations Trading from 1997-2002, as well as RBC Dominion Securities from 1994 to 1997 as a Convertible Bond and High Yield Arbitrage trader. Patrick graduated from University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) with honors in 1994.
Focus: SBA, Quantitative Analysis, Rates, Corporate Credit Hugo Bagao joined Kawa Capital in January 2014 and works on quantitative research and analysis for a variety of trades at Kawa Capital including correlation swaps, FX, Rates SBA, etc. Prior to Kawa Capital, Hugo worked at INCA Investments from 2005 to 2013 as a research analyst covering Latin American equities with a focus on the healthcare, telecom, transportation and non-bank financial industries, working on analytics, valuation models, and investment research. He graduated from University of Miami with a BBA in Finance (2005) and is also CFA charterholder.
Focus: Private Investments (joined Kawa 12/2015) Clemente Beda joined Kawa in December 2015. Prior to joining Kawa, Clemente worked as an Investment Banking Analyst in JPMorgan’s Multinational Group in New York as well as on a number of entrepreneurial projects in Brazil. Clemente graduated from Tufts University in 2005 with a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations, with a focus in International Economics and Entrepreneurship.
Focus: CRE, Private Investments Jacques is a Senior Investment Analyst and joined Kawa Capital in June 2013. From March 2015 to February 2017, Jacques was at Conergy, a former Kawa portfolio company, where he was Corporate Vice-President focused on corporate finance and global projects. Before joining Conergy, Jacques was an Investment Analyst at Kawa working on the analysis and execution of Private (“Club”) investments. Prior to joining Kawa Capital, Jacques was an analyst at BroadSpan Capital where he participated in all aspects of mergers & acquisitions and strategic advisory, as well as assisted the execution team on communication with clients and counter-parties throughout the transaction process. Jacques began his career at Horn Eichenwald Investments, an asset management and investment advisory firm in Miami. Jacques graduated from Florida International University in 2010. He received a BBA in Finance from the R. Kirk Landon Undergraduate School of Business.
Focus: Investment Support Jeremy Lash joined Kawa Capital in January 2015 and focuses on real estate and renewable energy transactions. Prior to joining Kawa Capital, Jeremy worked as an intern at South Florida’s leading multi-family real estate developer, The Related Group. Jeremy graduated from the University of Michigan in December 2014, receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, with a concentration in Finance and Accounting.
Zach Belokopitsky joined Kawa Capital in April 2018 as an Investment Analyst to provide support to the Investment team, with a focus on the SBA funds. Prior to joining Kawa Capital, Zach was an Investment Analyst at Dimension Capital Management, a Miami based registered investment advisor and multifamily office. At Dimension, Zach focused on prospective manager selection and due diligence, current manager monitoring and assisted senior analysts with overall portfolio construction, monitoring portfolio level exposures and assessing performance. Zach began his career as a Junior Financial Analyst at Olympus Insurance Company, a Florida domestic property and casualty insurer, where he was a member of the Investment Committee and involved with corporate finance, data modeling and firm research initiatives. Zach graduated from the University of Miami with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration with a major in Finance, during which time he worked as licensed real estate salesperson.
Felipe Lemos has been with Kawa Capital since its inception in September 2007. He currently serves as its Managing Director, Business Development. Prior to Kawa Capital, Felipe worked with European and Latin American investors in the South Florida real estate industry, cultivating expertise in commercial and residential real estate lending. In 2003, Felipe founded Caravelas Cigar, a premium cigar manufacturer in Brazil, which he sold in 2005. Prior to Caravelas, Felipe led Latin America and Europe expansion for the Brand Institute and was also responsible for several new product launches in the pharmaceutical and consumer products areas. Felipe holds a B.A. in history from Duke University (2000) focusing on Latin American Economic Development.
Luciano Lautenberg joined Kawa Capital in May 2011, as its Director of Marketing and Investor Relations. Luciano’s background includes 14 years of experience in strategic marketing and business consulting across Latin America. Prior to Kawa Capital, he worked for 5 years at Microsoft Corporation, 2 years of which he spent in Brazil managing the local channel's marketing strategy and 3 years in South Florida leading Microsoft Business Solutions marketing efforts for the Latin America region. Before that, Luciano worked for various business consultant companies such as IBM, Accenture, and Andersen Consulting, working across various industries. His areas of focus included change management, process design and solution system implementation. Luciano graduated in Business Administration from Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV - São Paulo, Brazil) and has an M.B.A. with a focus in Marketing from Instituto Brasileiro de Mercadologia (IBMEC – São Paulo, Brazil). He has also taken several executive education programs such as International Marketing at The University of Texas at Austin and Excellence in Marketing at Kellogg School of Management.
Carly Williams joined Kawa Capital in June 2016 as Director of Business Development and Investor Relations. Carly’s background includes over a decade of sell-side and buy-side experience. Prior to joining Kawa Capital, Carly served as Vice President in Marketing and Investor Relations at Pine River Capital Management in New York where she was part of a team responsible for strategically marketing and managing investment due diligence with investors across a variety of products, as well as maintaining and expanding existing client relationships. Before joining Pine River, Carly was an Associate at Goldman Sachs in New York, as part of the Strategic Portfolio Solutions Group within Mortgages and Structured Products trading within the FICC department. She focused on sourcing and executing a variety of structured transactions and securitization solutions for financial institutions. Carly received her B.S. from Vanderbilt University’s School of Engineering, Magna Cum Laude in 2007, where she majored in Engineering Science with minors in Financial Economics and Management of Technology. Carly is actively involved in The National YoungArts Foundation in Miami, a non-profit organization.
Geoffrey Tully joined Kawa Capital in April 2017 to focus on US Business Development and Investor Relations. Geoffrey’s background includes nine years at J.P. Morgan in New York and Miami. Prior to Kawa Capital, Geoffrey was a Private Banker in Miami where he led a team of specialists advising a select group of ultra-high net worth clients on balance sheet efficiency, portfolio construction, public and private investments, credit, and estate planning. Prior to relocating to Miami, Geoffrey spent six years in New York, primarily in JPM Private Bank’s equity solutions group. His focus was equity-linked derivatives and equity risk management, which included both leveraging the firm’s market outlook to create tailored investment solutions as well as helping clients manage their concentrated equity holdings. Geoffrey holds a BS in Finance and Economics at the University of Delaware. He is active in the community and serves on the Miami board of non-profit organization Common Threads.
Tyler Claus joined Kawa Capital as a Marketing Analyst in November 2016. Prior to Kawa Capital, Tyler worked as an Investment Summer Analyst at WE Family Offices, one of Florida’s largest independent Family Offices. Tyler’s primary responsibility was to analyze equity, fixed income, and alternative investments for allocation in the firm’s Ultra high net worth client portfolios. Before joining WE, Tyler was a real estate sales associate at American Marketing and Management, and a Summer Analyst at Landmark Companies, a real estate investment firm specializing in south Florida multi-family housing. At Landmark, Tyler researched and sourced potential investments as a member of the acquisitions team. Tyler received his B.B.A. from the University of Miami School of Business Administration in 2016, where he majored in Finance. Tyler is a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) charterholder.
Walter Wilms joined Kawa Capital in August 2016 as an Investment Analyst performing investment research, analysis and reporting across different products, deals and trades. In March 2018, Walter became part of the investor relations and business development team. In his current role at Kawa Capital, Walter is focusing on managing relationships with LatAm clients, fund raising efforts and new business initiatives. Prior to Kawa Capital, Walter worked at a Family Office in Brazil (SSS Participações) from 2010 to 2014. His main responsibilities included the analysis and implementation of wealth management strategies, financial planning, investment analysis across multiple asset classes and offshore investments structuring. He was also responsible for managing relationships with family members and banking institutions. Walter holds a Bachelor Degree in Law from the Pontifical Catholic University in Brazil and a Master of Business Administration degree from Babson College, concentrating in Finance and Investments.
Bruno Piacentini, CFA joined Kawa Capital in January 2016. He currently serves as its Managing Director, Operations. Prior to Kawa Capital, Bruno worked at FAMA Investimentos, an asset management company focused on Brazilian equities, where he was a Partner and Head of Research. At FAMA, Bruno began as an analyst responsible for sectors such as retail, manufacturing, food, consumer goods, education and healthcare. He later became the Head of Research and was part of the portfolio management committee. From 2014 to 2015, Bruno also served as Chief Financial Officer and Director of Bom Sabor, a food company with over 300 employees. Prior to FAMA Investimentos, Bruno worked at ABN Amro Bank as a financial advisor for infrastructure projects. Bruno graduated in Business Administration from Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV - São Paulo, Brazil) and is a CFA charterholder.
Joanna Panzera joined Kawa Capital in October 2015 as Assistant General Counsel and Compliance. Prior to joining Kawa Capital, Joanna served as Chief Counsel Europe for Darby Overseas Investments, Ltd. in Vienna and Bratislava, where she was responsible for all legal matters associated with Darby’s private equity funds and mezzanine debt funds investing in Central and Southeastern Europe and Turkey. Prior to Darby, Joanna was an associate at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP, in the New York and Brussels offices, specializing in cross-border M&A and private equity transactions. Joanna received her B.A. from Hunter College, where she graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, and her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where she graduated cum laude and was a member of its Law Review.
Jeremy joined Kawa Capital in September 2014. As General Counsel, Jeremy is responsible for all legal matters at Kawa Capital and also currently serves as Chief Compliance Officer. Prior to joining Kawa Capital, Jeremy practiced law in the corporate department at Cahill Gordon & Reindel LLP in New York and London as well as at Clifford Chance LLP in London, where he focused primarily on leveraged and acquisition finance, including some of the largest LBO financings to date, capital raising in the public and private markets, debt restructurings, and corporate and securities legal matters. Jeremy also spent time in the debt capital markets group at J.P. Morgan in London, where he was the legal representative on high yield, investment grade and other debt capital market transactions. Jeremy received his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, and his J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law, where he graduated cum laude and was a member of its Law Review.
Lando Kravetz joined Kawa Capital in 2013 to work on special projects. In his current capacity, Lando leads Kawa’s Digital Strategy. Prior to Kawa Capital, Lando worked as a consultant for Oracle and Ernst & Young and managed technology operations for Citibank. He earned a B.Sc. in Computer Science in Brazil and later a M.Sc. in Finance in NY from Baruch College.
Dimas Rosario, Director of Information Technology and Chief Security Officer: Dimas Rosario joined Kawa Capital in 2015 as the Director of Information Technology. Prior to Kawa Capital, Dimas served as the Director of Technology for Adler Group, Inc. During Dimas’s 7-year tenure at Adler Group, he was tasked with aligning Adler Group’s growing business model with the proper technology to provide scalability, business continuity, reduced operational expenditure, and increased efficiency. Dimas is an accomplished technologist with over 20 years of experience and industry accreditations.
Peter Cunha joined Kawa Capital in March, 2018 as Assistant General Counsel. Prior to joining Kawa Capital, Peter was an associate at Greenberg Traurig, P.A., in his Miami office, specializing in cross-border general corporate and M & A matters and transactions. Peter received his B.A. from Moravian College, where he graduated summa cum laude, and his J.D. from the University of Miami School of Law, where he graduated magna cum laude and served as Executive Editor of the University of Miami Law Review.
Ronnell Robinzine joined Kawa Capital in November 2018 as Assistant General Counsel. Prior to joining Kawa Capital, Ronnell was an associate at Foley & Lardner LLP in Miami and Tampa, specializing in commercial real estate and business law transactions. Prior to joining Foley & Lardner, he was an associate at Akerman LLP in Miami, specializing in commercial mortgage-backed securities loan originations, commercial real estate acquisition, disposition, leasing, and finance transactions. Ronnell received his B.S. in finance from Illinois State University, where he graduated magna cum laude, and his J.D. from the University of Florida Levin College of Law, where he graduated cum laude and served as the Editor-in-Chief of its Journal of Law and Public Policy.
Tatjana Martin joined Kawa Capital in March 2017 as Legal & Compliance Assistant. Prior to joining Kawa Capital, Tatjana worked at DietMart Corporation, where she conducted product research and development. Prior to joining DietMart, Tatjana worked at M7 Corporation, where she conducted “know your customer” review and supervised the customer service department. Additional prior experience includes serving as the Assistant to the Vice President at NPP Eliks America, Inc. and translation services in Estonia. Tatjana received her certificate in Paralegal Studies from the University of Miami and AML Compliance Managers Certificate from Online Training Technologies. Tatjana also attended EMKTS in Tallinn, Estonia, where her area of concertation was in education, humanities, social sciences, and foreign languages.
Brittany Lara joined Kawa Capital in October 2018 as a Compliance Associate. Prior to Kawa Capital, she was a Compliance Officer at Safety Pay where she developed the Compliance Department and their KYC, AML, Data Protection and Privacy as well as other policies and documentation in the US, LATAM, and EU. Prior to joining Safety Pay, she was a Contracts and Legal Compliance Analyst at Banco Santander where she worked in Private Banking and Wealth Management. While at Banco Santander she managed KYC, AML, and BSA documents for clients’ structures in compliance with the laws of the US, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, UK, EU, and the European Economic Area (EEA). She has her Master’s Degree in Legal Studies from WashU School of Law, during which she also attained her Certification in Regulatory Compliance. She completed her Associate of Science in Business Administration and Bachelor of Applied Science in Business Supervision and Management from Miami Dade College.
Katherine Handley joined the Kawa Capital Operations team in September 2010. Prior to Kawa Capital, Katherine worked in the tourism field, where she developed her operational and organization skills. Katherine received her B.A. from McGill University where she majored in Cultural Studies.
Xi Liu joined Kawa Capital in January 2018 as assistant controller and fund accounting supervisor. Prior to joining Kawa Capital, Xi held assistant controller position in a multifamily real estate investment firm where she spent five years focusing on financial management of the organization, including cash management, financial reporting, cost benefit analysis, forecasting needs, and related training. Xi has a strong accounting background with keen qualitative and quantitative ability. As an alumnus of The University of Miami, Xi holds a master degree in Accounting.
Danielle Dixon joined Kawa Capital in 2018 as a Fund Accounting Supervisor. She has over 10 years of experience and prior to joining Kawa Capital, Danielle worked as a Fund Accounting Supervisor for State Street Global Advisors. At State Street she supervised a team of Fund Accountants within the IFS Hedge fund department and played a lead role in the preparation of audited financial statements for several clients. She currently holds a BBA in Finance from Howard University and an Executive MBA from Rutgers University.
Kristine Ascanio joined Kawa Capital in 2011 as Executive Assistant providing administrative support to the Kawa Team and handling Human Resource issues. Prior to Kawa Capital, Kristine was a Property Manager for TMG Management in Pompano Beach, FL. She also served six years in the United States Marine Corps. Kristine received her B.S from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in Communications. Kristine continues to grow at Kawa taking a Financial & Cost Accounting course in 2016 and her responsibilities include helping with accounts payable and accounts receivable.
James Patterson joined Kawa Capital in 2014 and is an Operations Analyst on the Operations Team. Prior to Kawa Capital, James was the Brand Manager of Cheapsk8shoes an affiliate of Ambush Boarding Co where he focused on third party sales applications. Early in his career, James was the Operations Manager for Progressive Skatepark located in the Atlanta, Georgia area. He earned his degree in Marketing Management from the Technical College System of Georgia.
Hugh joined the Kawa Capital team in May 2018 as a private equity fund accountant. Prior to Kawa Capital, Hugh worked as a property accountant for both single and multifamily real estate investment firms, managing the daily accounting functions of multiple portfolios of properties and entities. Hugh graduated Cum Laude from Barry University in May 2014, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a Major in Accounting.
Katiussi Soares joined Kawa Capital in February 2015 as a receptionist. Prior to joining Kawa Capital, Katiussi was a customer service representative.
Alberto Palacio joined Kawa Capital in 2017 as System Administrator for the IT Department. Prior to joining Kawa Captial, Alberto served as the System Administrator at Adler Group, Inc. for 8 years. At Adler Group he worked closely with The Director of IT to maintain, upgrade, and evolve the in-house technology as the business needs changed throughout the years.
